PEOPLE OF THE PARISH
The theme of this page is to introduce the people who lived in the
parish over the centuries.
I intend to include information from militia lists,
gravestone memorials, parish council records, etc as I can gather them. Quick Links on the right lists
those available so far, selection will take you to that section. Note: There is also information on
the people of the parish contained in the Valuation Rolls, Old Parish
Records, and Census Pages
(links above).

BUITTLE OLD CHURCHYARD
CHURCHYARD MEMORIALS. From
1912, this newspaper article on the gravestones of Buittle Churchyard serves as
an introduction to the past residents of the Parish who now rest within its
confines. It contains a list of surnames recorded on the grave stones at that
time, as well
as comments on some of the people. As will be seen from examination of the Old
Parish Records however, only a small number of those interred here are recorded
on memorial stones, with many lying in unmarked graves.
Buittle Parish
October 1802. The militia list, as required by statute.
Buittle Parish
September 1807.
A later list, with updated members.
Urr
Volunteer Company July 1808. Don Jaggie
at GENUKI maintains this web page containing details of the Urr Company of the
Stewartry of Kirkcudbright Volunteer Infantry. Some members of this company are
from Buittle Parish. He also has a page for
Urr Militia, dated 1802.
POST OFFICE DIRECTORY
for
1921/22. Gives name and occupation of the householders in many of
the farms and cottages in the Parish.
POST
OFFICE DIRECTORY for 1924/27. Although not long after the
above, there are sufficient changes to make it worthwhile having a look.
SHEEP BUISTS and MARKS.
Dated 1880, lists some parish farms, farmers, and how they marked
their sheep so that they could identify them.
ROYAL CALEDONIAN CURLING CLUB.
From their published Annual for 1858. Life was not, of course, all toil and strife.
Although few records remain of parishioners' pastimes this link lists the
members of Buittle Parish Curling Club for that year.
HORSE
TAX 1797. In this year, as a consequence of the impending Napoleonic
War, the Government needed to raise additional money Farmers were required to
pay the sum of Two Shillings in tax for each working horse they owned (36 Geo. III, Cap xv.)
The result of the Buittle assessment can be viewed here.
WINDOW
TAX. Records exist for the Parish for the years between 1748
and 1795. Information has been extracted from these and can be viewed here.
PEOPLE OF THE PARISH. Many
readers of these pages are interested in finding out about their ancestors, and
some have established family links back to Buittle Parish. Recording of
information gleaned about these past natives, or of those just passing through
as temporary residents, is a valuable resource for the future, and I hope to
develop the idea of making some of these public through this web site. The
links following will give access to the essays gathered so far. Some have been
prepared by myself from my researches, whilst others are contributed by
others.
Do you have any information about People of
the Parish? If so, I'd love to hear from you, and would be delighted to include
your essays and photos if relevant to the parish. Please e-mail me: [email protected]

rates of assistance to be given to the poor of the parish. This replaced the
previous Kirk Session powers in this regard.
It is easy to forget, whilst looking though
these pages, or researching your ancestors, how difficult life could be in the
18th and 19th Centuries. The annotations I have made to these minutes may highlight
some of the hardships experienced.
COUNCIL HOUSES, PALNACKIE Once
established in the early part of the 19th Century, very little in the way of
expansion was experienced in the village. Around 1950, however, as part of a
major increase in provision of local authority housing, Kirkcudbright County
Council embarked on the building of new houses in Glen Road, and in Riverside
Drive, a cul-de-sac leading off Glen Road. This link will take you to a page
detailing when the houses were built, and the names of the first tenants.
THE ESTATES OF THE PARISH. Two
large estates composed a great extent of the Parish, and many important
documents relating to them exist today. Many references are made elsewhere on
this web site to the lands and their owners / inhabitants. This section is
intended to reproduce some of the more important and informative sources of
information found amongst estate papers.
Munshes or Munches Estate:
1. A note on George
Maxwell of Munshes, who obtained wadset of the estate in 1637, and of his
descendents who died out in 1809, when the estate went to the Maxwells of
Terraughtie.
2. A tree of the family
of Maxwells of Breckonside, later of Terraughtie, now of Munshes. Unsigned,
but apparently researched and written by Wellwood Herries Maxwell around the
middle of the 19th Century
3. A note on the Maxwells of Munshes
contained in the family bible.
4. A list of estates
held by families of the name MAXWELL in Nithsdale or Kirkcudbrightshire in the
18th Century.
Almorness / Orchardton
Estate:
1. A detailed valuation
of all the lands etc. forming the combined estates of the late Mr Douglas of
Gelston Castle, undertaken in 1832.
2. Accounts
from the Estate Factor's (James Lidderdale, Castle Douglas) for the year
1855-56, showing details of the income and expenditure for the whole estate.
including improvements being made and public/parochial burdens.
3. Rentals for the estate of Caigton
and Almorness for the year 1831 to 1832, with some properties in Palnackie,
followed by a list of the rentals for the whole parish dated 1829..
