Window Tax Records.

These exist for the years between 1748 and 1795 and are held in the Scottish record office (E.326/1/59, E.326/1/60 and E.326/1/61 refer.) I have noted new entries where made, but have not recorded places dropped from the list. There are seldom more than 7 or 8 entries for any year.

In 1748 there were only five entries. Sir Thomas Maxwell was in Orchyardton (sic), John Coulter in Kirkennan. William Maxwell in Munches, John Canon in Barlochan, and the Rev. John McNaught in the Manse. 1750 was the same, but it was noted that the surveyor had been refused entry to Orchardton to assess it!

In 1754, Nathaniel Duke is listed in Leaths, Mrs. Cannon in Barlochan, and John MacCartney in Halket Leaths. In 1758 a Samuel Coupland is listed in Curcro (changed to Cora the next year), and in 1759 a William Halliday is listed at Barlochan Miln (The first house in Palnackie? Was William Halliday the first resident of the village?)

1763 introduces an Alexander Gordon at Little Knox, Robert Riddick at Corbietoun, William Reid at Kirkennan, and 1769 has Henry McCulloch in Leaths. 1775 lists William Coltart in Glen and William Herries in Hopeland (changed following year to Hopehead). 1779 has John Tait in Corbieton, John Gordon in Cool (sic), William Thomson in Orchardton, and John Gordon in Kigton (also variously listed as Cogtoun and Caigton, and of course it has recently changed again to Craigton!).

1781 adds Thomas Coupland in Blackbelly, and 1782 lists Orchardton as empty. 1791 records that John Kirkpatrick is in the Leaths, John Tait in Halketleaths, Mrs. Gordon in Little Knox, James Copland in Buittle, William Thomson in Garden. 1795 adds Thomas Hutchison in Corbieton and John Rigg in Halketleaths.
