Another source of information on the family of Maxwell of Munshes etc is the family bible. I found the following note amongst the Maxwell papers in the Ewart Library. It is entitled "Except from Munshes Family Bible 1878"

The following is taken from the family bible of the late John Maxwell of Terraughrie, afterwards of Munshes - and the original it can be proved is in the handwriting of the said John Maxwell.  The bible was printed in 1759.
James Maxwell of Breckonside was second son of John Lord Herries by Elizabeth, daughter to the Lord Maxwell, Earl of Morton. He married Margaret Vance, daughter of Barnbarroch, and relict of Sir Robert Gordon of Lochinvar, by whom he had two sons, John Maxwell of Brakenside, who never married, and died at Buittle in the beginning of the year 1719, and Alexander Maxwell of Terraughtie who married, first, Margaret Maxwell the youngest co-heiress of the estate of Conheath, by whom he had 2 sons; John Maxwell who succeeded his uncle John Maxwell of Brakenside in 1719, and George Maxwell, joiner in London. He died at London 1748 without issue, and one daughter Catherine married to Robert Neilson of Barncalzie.
Secondly he married Janet Irving, daughter to John Irvine, some time Provost of Dumfries, by whom he had four sons; Captain William Maxwell of Carruchan, Alexander, Harbert, and Charles, and five daughters; Lucy, Margaret, Rachael and Winifred. He died at Carnsalloch suddenly 10 October 1711, and was burried in the annex of Kirkmahoe Church opposite to the south door.
John Maxwell, his eldest son and successor, married first Hellen Hurray, his cousin german by their mothers, by whom he had William Maxwell his successor who married Janet McCartney by whom he had one daughter Hellen Maxwell and died the -- March 1756; secondly the said John Maxwell married in April 1719 Elizabeth Maxwell, eldest daughter of James Maxwell of Arkland by whom he had on son, John, born 7 Feb. 1720, and two daughters, Elizabeth, born 27 October 1721 married to the Rev. Mr. Robert McMorine, minister of Kirkpatrick Durham, and Margaret, born 5 Nov. 1723. She died 11 April 1742, and he died 12 May 1724 at Buittle, and was burried in the middle of the quire at the east gavell. 
John Maxwell, his only son by the second mariage, he married Agnes Hanna, eldest daughter of William Hanna by Jean Mean his wife, by whom he had -
Elizabeth, born 11 April 1742, at nine of the morning, Sunday; 
Alexander born 28 January 1744, a little after 7 in the morning, Saturday; 
William, born 14th Feb. 1746, about 1 of the morning, Friday; 
John, born 21 Aug. 1747 after 6 of the morning. He died 20 Sept. 1753 at 11 at night, Thursday;
Agnes Maxwell, born 15 July 1749 after 2 of the morning, Saturday;
Jean Maxwell, born 18 Dec. 1750, after 10 of the fore noone Tuesday;
Hellen Maxwell, born 2nd Feb. 1752, after 4 of the morning Sunday - she died 5 Aug. 1753 after 11 fore noon Sunday;
Catherine, born 5 April 1754 new style, after 8 of the fore noon, Friday;
Margaret, born 15 August 1755 after 6 of the morning, Friday.
Agnes Hanna died between 5 and 6 of the afternoon, Saurday 13 September 1855
