This record does not show where the Curling Club met to play, but it must be
presumed that Barwhillanty (also known as Lochhill) Loch, being the only piece of standing water in the
Parish until the construction of Dalbeattie reservoir, must have been used
during periods of hard weather. Some other parishes had specially constructed
shallow curling rinks, but I have found no mention of one in Buittle Parish.
Play would therefore be restricted to those winters which were cold enough to
freeze the loch surface to a safe thickness. It can be noted that the
junior medal used in the illustration was only won in 1856, 1864 and 1884. These
may have been the only winters where play was possible.
